In 2018 I was hired into the YouTube department at BBC Studios as a Video Editor.
There was a heavy amount of onboarding procedures in place at the time, so I took extensive notes. Some of the team members at the time noticed this and offered me the opportunity to design some training documents and train new starters.
As part of my role, I ended up getting a lot of experience across the board, with my job being closer to a first Production Assistant job than being limited to a Video Editor — I would often help with rights clearance and helped pass messages along across different departments and buildings. I also helped the channel managers with SEO, ideation and thumbnail design, valuable skills that I would carry onto my later work.
Additionally, while many of the edits I made were simple clips or compilations, I was later given the opportunity to start making original motion graphics, which were some of the first animations I was able to make professionally.
